Dixon doesn’t do things by halves. Twice crowned New Zealand’s Sportsman of the Year, the 40-year old driver was clearly determined to notch up yet another annual championship title, despite what shaped up to be challenging conditions. Ahead of his rivals by 117 points at one stage earlier in the year, his lead had been whittled down to just 32, meaning he had to finish better than ninth place. This he did with style, earning himself a spot in the top three all-time IndyCar winner’s list.
 

The ride itself offered no shortage of thrills and spills with the tires fighting for grip in the pouring rain. Dixon drove masterfully, his nerve unfailing in the downpour, biding his time and finally moving from fifth to third place with less than a quarter of the race remaining.

Dixon had words of praise for his team, loyal in this, the hardest, the most bizarre of years. ‘6th championships, 50 wins, it’s definitely crazy to see how the season went in 2020 and it was nice to see great spectator presence considering what the world is going through with the pandemic and I think our team did an exceptional job. What a team and thank you so much to everybody involved.’

Dixon’s latest title follows those from 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2018, putting him just one championship away from IndyCar legend AJ Foyt’s all-time record. As Dixon himself says, “six is good, seven sounds better!”
