SIHH 2014: Tourbillon RM 19-01 Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman, the famed oscar-winning American actress and worldwide partner of the brand since 2011, unveils the first watch designed and created together with Richard Mille, embodied in the Tourbillon RM 19-01 Natalie Portman.

Recognized as a brilliant woman in her public as well as private life, she is a multi-talented woman of high accomplishments, having graduated from Harvard in psychology in addition to her roles at the theater and on screen. Despite her demanding schedule, she still finds the energy to support various charitable associations such as the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA), a non-profit organization offering solutions for micro- credit in developing countries, and Free the Children, a charity defending the rights of children worldwide.

For this first collaboration, Natalie Portman set her mind on an image combining strong associations and complex undertones expressed by a diamond studded and encrusted tracery based upon the image of a spider. This predator insect fascinates us with its strong symbolic power as noted by the abundant myths and stories about spiders to be found in every civilization and across all continents, often in relation to feminine energy and creativity. A mistress of fate and weaver of reality, the spider is the symbol of the soul but also freedom. For the Altaic peoples of Central Asia and Siberia, it represents the soul released from the body, and on the mystical level, the thread of the spider is a support in spiritual development. Among the communities of West Africa, the spider, called Anansi is seen as the originator of the first humans and creator of the Sun, Moon and stars.

The RM19-01 manual winding tourbillon caliber is assembled around a black rhodium-plated, 18K white gold black sapphire set baseplate, a first for Richard Mille. The spider within the movement, also in 18K white gold and delicately set with diamonds, forms an integral part of the movement, with the abdomen of the spider actually supporting the bridges of the tourbillon, and its legs supporting the two winding barrels. This aesthetic achievement was only possible after a long and difficult machining process followed by many hours of hand polishing, finishing and the guiding eye of the watchmaker working in harmony with the centuries old skills of the jewel setter- together creating the physical manifestation of Natalie’s personal vision for this unique and limited edition timepiece.

Available in 20 pieces worldwide, this novel ladies’ creation will be worn by Natalie Portman at several events worldwide. It is yet another proof of Richard Mille’s fascination and devotion to women everywhere.
